Messy Kitchen: Simple and easy savory scrolls that kids will love!

Simply tasty savory scrolls!

Savory scrollsDinner time is a hectic time in any household that has children running about, or even with a partner/husband or other adult for that matter. For some reason this time of day screams chaos! But don’t stress, these super simple scrolls will have dinner time all sorted out and even the kids can help you make them (if you’re brave). Or if you are more like me, send your toddler off with an afternoon snack so you have a few moments to prepare the main course!

Might I just add that anyone who knows me, knows that I’m not much of cook! Since becoming a mummy I figure that I should learn by making my own mess in the kitchen. So given my lack of skills, these savory scrolls must be super easy!!! Perfect for a quick dinner, lunches, snacks and even for lunch boxes.

Puff pastry sheets (frozen ready made – I know this is cheating, but you want this to be simple right?)

Sauce of your choosing – we used BBQ on some and garlic chilli pepper pesto on the rest!

Your choice of fillings – eg sliced capsicum, sliced sun dried tomatoes, chopped feta cheese, grated cheddar cheese

1 whisked egg

  1. Defrost and prepare your pastry sheets and preheat your oven as outlined on the packaging.
  2. Spread your favourite sauce across the pastry sheet, leaving a 2cm strip at one end untouched.Pizza scrolls
  3. Spread your favourite fillings (capsicum, sun dried tomatoes and feta cheese) evenly across the sauce.
  4. Cover fillings with grated cheddar cheese. Your pastry sheet should resemble a pizza.
  5. Brush a bit of egg on the clear end of pastry.
  6. Gently roll the pastry so that the egg covered strip joins to the outside of your sroll and gently bind together.
  7. Cut scroll into 6 smaller sections. Place on a tray using baking paper and brush them with some egg.
  8. Cook until pastry is golden brown.
  9. Let them cool. Eat and enjoy!

There are so many different combinations of fillings and sauces you can use to create your own mini masterpieces. I also made cheesy mite scrolls with Vegemite as my sauce and covered with grated cheese for lunches and snacks. This was a huge hit in my household! I have also tried just filling the pastry sheets with thick vanilla custard for a sweet alternative. This too was so delicious served with ice-cream and yet so simple. With all this creativity I’ll be a candidate for master chef in no time!!! (cough cough!)
